French screen idol Brigitte Bardot was her contemporary in the 1950s and 1960s. Still, to this day, Mylène Demongeot (b. 1935 in Nice, France), now a highly acclaimed character actress, is still working in front of the camera. Sixty years ago, she first was the memorable youthful who appeared opposite the French royal screen couple Yves Montand and Simone Signoret in “Les sorcières de Salem” (1957), which earned her a BAFTA nomination as ‘most promising newcomer.’ As a result, lots of doors opened, including for Otto Preminger’s “Bonjour Tristesse” (1958) opposite Deborah Kerr, David Niven and Jean Seberg, while she became a box-office star in her home country, playing Milady de Winter in “Les trois mousquetaires: Première époque – Les ferrets de la reine” (1961), followed by the sequel “Les trois mousquetaires: Tome II—La vengeance de Milady” (1962), and the successful “Fantômas” trilogy—the French answer to James Bond—with “Fantômas” (1964), “Fantômas se déchaîne” (1965) and “Fantômas contre Scotland Yard” (1967), all with Jean Marais in the title role as the man who used his many disguises as his ultimate weapon.

Right from the start, when she played the manipulative mistress in “Bonjour Tristesse” and the blonde who seduced Alain Delon in “Faibles femmes” (1959), Miss Demongeot managed to avoid typecasting; the former model-turned-actress first became a sex symbol, and then a hugely respected actress who gave the French cinema a new elan. Twice nominated for a César, she has been residing in the south of France for many years, but also owns an apartment in Paris where she lives whenever she works in the French capital. Besides acting, her main concerns are the environment, animals, and writing books which has been taking up quite a bit of her time in recent years. Her literary efforts include ‘Les lilas de Kharkov’ (2009) about her mother, as well as books about her long and rewarding career in movies: ‘’Tiroirs secrets’ (2001), ‘Mémoires de cinema: Une vie et des films’ (2011), and ‘Mes monsters sacrés: Souvenirs et portraits’ (2015).

This interview from 2014, at the 8th edition of the Festival International du Film Policier de Liège in Belgium, where she was a member of the jury, was conducted in the salons of the Châteaux des Thermes, located in Chaudfontaine nearby Liège.

Miss Demongeot, writing has become very important to you now, hasn’t it?

Certainly. There’s this one quality that I got and that I’m now very much aware of: I say what I think. Just like that. When I had finished my book about my mother, it took me a few years to rewrite it until the publisher suggested that someone should read it. Two days later, they told me, ‘Not bad, but you’re pretty reserved, aren’t you? You don’t get to the point right away, you really don’t say what you actually think.’ So I decided to start all over again, and I knew then I had to say what was really on my mind. And I did it, I think. The book was very well received; everybody told me it was very honest and truthful.

Is that most essential to you when you’re writing?

When I write a book, I only need four things: a pen, paper, my hand, and my brain. As soon as the manuscript is finished, I read it, and when I’m ready for it, I start typing it on my computer. Then I don’t have to think about it any longer; I only read it, which is a huge difference. Marc Simenon [son of Belgian author Georges Simenon and Demongeot’s husband from 1966 until his death in 1999] taught me not to use too many adjectives, don’t focus too much on details, tell your story as it comes to mind – things like that. So basically, when you’re writing, you use your hand and your brain, like so many people do in so many different professions—also when you’re acting.

As a veteran from the French cinema, you’re still acting now. You witnessed the French New Wave and everything that has happened since then. What’s your approach now when you appear on the set in the morning?

Let me tell you something. If you look at the old films directed by Julien Duvivier or Henri-Georges Clouzot, they were all masterpieces: beautifully directed, great lightning, inspiring dialogues… That cinema has been dead now for a long time since it was replaced by the New Wave, which introduced a whole different kind of cinema with a completely new structure, as you can see in films by Louis Malle, François Truffaut, Claude Chabrol—although in my opinion, Chabrol is not that different from Duvivier. But anyway, what is still the same, and has always been, is your collaboration with the director, which has always been crucial to me. It still is. When I receive a new script, and I read it for the first time, there are always things to clarify, and you need to get through it with the director, possibly change the dialogue here and there, leave out something that’s not really necessary, or add one or two things that might give a scene or your character an extra dimension. When I was young and just started acting, all I did was listen to the instructions they gave me without asking myself too many questions, but to develop your character to the fullest, you need to collaborate creatively with your director. Both of you need to give and take.

How about the working conditions on the set? To what extend have they changed over the years?

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, they were much better than they are now. They were much more luxurious back then. As an actor, you were worshipped, you know. Don’t forget, this was the era of the stars. You had the American stars, and in France, we had actresses such as Brigitte Bardot, Michèle Morgan, and Micheline Presle. A lot of time and energy was invested in this stardom and the way we all looked because looks were terribly important. Through the years, those have become less crucial. I saw a film the other day that I liked a lot, but I thought, ‘Mon Dieu, what have they done with the leading lady!’ The film absolutely didn’t do her any justice—she was a wonderful actress who didn’t play a glamorous role, but to me, she should have looked much better on the screen. I was upset when I saw that.

How do you look back to your early days as a French screen star?

You know, the funny thing is that I didn’t have to do anything special to be successful. It doesn’t sound very elegant to say, I know, but it’s the truth. I was pampered and spoiled rotten. People told me that I was beautiful and talented, and they got away with guiding my career in the direction they chose. As the years went by, everything changed. You get older, your so-called beauty—or whatever that means—fades, you start questioning the things you do and everything that happens around you, in your own life, in the world—everything. Your own perception of the world changes entirely…

Do you also notice this evolution in your work?

Absolutely. Whenever I read a script now for the first time, I’m much more critical. First, I go through the entire script and ask myself: what’s it all about? What are they trying to say? Then I go through it all over again and focus on my own character, to see what I can do with it. Is it interesting enough? What can I do with it, or add to it from my perspective as an actress, as a woman, using my own experience, so the character becomes as real and as alive as possible, without overlooking anything. If the part doesn’t interest me at all, I refuse it right away, unless I would accept it only for the money [laughs].

How important are the pre-Montand or Signoret actors of French cinema to the French audiences now? People like Arletty, Jean Marais, Annabella, Louis Jouvet…

I think it is very upsetting that many young actors today don’t have a clue about pre-war French film history. I was on the train to Paris only recently, returning from the south of France where I attended a screening of “La belle et la bête” [1946] starring Jean Marais, and in my compartment was this young and ambitious 22-year-old actress. We started talking, and I asked if she liked Jean Marais. C’est qui, lui? [laughs]. I was so amazed! Then I asked her, ‘How about James Dean? Does that name ring a bell? Marlon Brando? Humphrey Bogart?!’ I gave her several names, but she didn’t know any of them. So I told her, ‘You know, if you really want to become an actress, you should go to the Cinématheque to discover and study what all of those people have done in their lifetime, and see how exceptional they all have been. You have to absorb what they did!’ I once experienced it myself when I was doing “36 Quai des Orfèvres,” way back in 2004. I had an argument with the producer one day about the way I was treated on the set, it was not at all according to my contract, and I told him, ‘You would never do that with Michèle Morgan!’ And he asked me, ‘Who’s that??’ You know, what disturbs me most, is that some of the young actors don’t even care about those old actors. When we were young, we spent as much time as we possibly could watching those old black and white classics. Now, people are looking for instant fame, even if it is just for one day. That’s the major difference with the days when we were young in the early 1950s. We seem to be living in a Kleenex society now: on prend, on jette. Maybe it’s because everything goes so much faster. Yet, it won’t prevent me from doing what I think I should do: I haven’t achieved my ultimate goal yet, which is absolute perfection. But I’m still working on it. I still would love to do that one very special film, to play this one unique part when I, in the end, will be able to say, ‘I did it!’ I still didn’t make it, but as I said, I keep on working as long as I can to get there.
