Karin Viard: “I like to stick to the screenplay, because the reality of the scene is always very crucial to me”

“Jalouse” starring French leading lady and two-time César-winner Karin Viard (b. 1966), launched the 18th edition of the Arras Film Festival in France, region Nord-Pas-de-Calais, only a few days ago. Playing a recently divorced teacher who becomes jealous of her daughter, friends—just about anybody, really—Ms. Viard paid a short visit to Arras to promote the release of the film.

She was accompanied by the film’s screenwriting and directing duo, the highly accomplished team of brothers David and Stéphane Foenkinos, who previously did a superb job when directing Audrey Tautou as a grieving widow in their first feature “La délicatesse” (2011, a.k.a. “Delicacy”). I became an admirer of theirs right away, and now, taking their second screen effort, “Jealouse,” into consideration, they’re undoubtedly here to stay.

The Q&A in Arras with all three talented French screen personalities was at times a conversation with a dozen reporters witnessing how they exchanged ideas about their work on the set and the making of the film. Yet it also focused quite a bit on Ms. Viard: with her long record of screen credits so far, she has been an established, versatile, and much sought-after actress in French cinema for many years now, and that’s pretty much why I pick out a selection of her contribution during the Q&A—without being disrespectful to the talented Foenkinos brothers though. Hopefully, very soon, we’ll be able to sit down and talk about their inventive approach to the art and the craft of filmmaking.

Meanwhile, the calendar has turned a page, and November has begun. So has the awards season, for that matter. A few months from now, we will all know the nominations for the major film awards when the best of 2017 will be announced. Considering Ms. Viard’s tour-de-force performance in “Jalouse,” it’s not unlikely that she might gather another—her eleventh—César nomination and possibly a third César win. Just for the record, only four French actors ever were nominated more than ten times for a César, France’s national film award: Gérard Depardieu (17), Isabelle Huppert (16), Catherine Deneuve (14), and Daniel Auteuil (12), each of them winning twice.

And why does Ms. Viard deserve to be a contender for a Best Actress César? Because—let’s be honest—she does a terrific job portraying a 50-year-old woman by the name of Nathalie, a caring mother who turns into a jealous and envious woman at everyone who crosses her path. She needs professional help, and she needs it fast, as she alienates from her own environment. A character of complexity, much of the kudos also go to the Foenkinos brothers, who created more than a simplified one-dimensional stereotype in a film which at times can be labeled as a psychological suspenser.

Ms. Viard, how would you define the character of Nathalie? Is she someone you’d recognize?

People always ask me if there’s some of me in each new role I play. And sometimes the answer is yes because I am very energetic, but if you ask me if this role, in particular, bears any resemblance to me, then I have to say no. I did have to analyze the character of Nathalie, of course, because I had to play her, but that’s something entirely different. It was a challenging role, and I like to play this kind of role. On top of that, it was very well written: everything you see on the screen was written in the script, we didn’t improvise anything. Sometimes you play a character wherein the script tiny bits and pieces are missing, which you have to fill in yourself, but not with this screenplay. Nathalie’s lack of understanding, her failures, her own personal problems, how people treat her, and the way she treats others make her a fascinating character to play, but I couldn’t be friends with her at all.

You have played a wide range of characters up until now, haven’t you?

Yes, and that’s so rewarding about acting; you get to play bourgeois or working-class people in different genres… That’s also what I like as a spectator when I go out to see a movie. You deal with all kinds of subjects, very often in a different kind of cinema: there is this wonderful kind of magic in literature, and you also find it in movies. What I like about the character of Nathalie—there’s this intelligent woman, she has a good job, and she reaches a point when things go wrong. Then you need more than just your own intelligence to fall back on: your feelings, your emotions, your empathy are also very important and crucial components to keep in shape, mentally. You need to be able to get in touch and stay in touch with the outside world. So there’s much more involved than only your intelligence when you’re coping with a personal crisis. And from that point of view, it’s an interesting topic to discuss.

Karin Viard during the Q&A at the Arras Film Festival | Leo/Film Talk

How do you prepare for a scene?

I like to work fast and stick to the screenplay because the reality of the scene is always very crucial to me. Whether it is humor, or drama, or any emotion, I like to respect the scene according to its perspective and point of view. And as far as the quality of good humor is concerned in certain scenes, sometimes it’s just there; you don’t even have to look for it to be truthful in the work you do. I do realize that I am very energetic, so I have to control myself and be very disciplined. Once I have finished a film, I can start another one in less than two weeks. This seems to be my natural rhythm, probably because I really love acting so much. I really adore it. And what’s interesting to me: if you pick out ten actors to play the same character, you’ll get ten different performances. And what makes their performances different, one from the other? They’ll each give it a touch of their own, an identity of their own. In my case, I feel I can only play a character that I can understand. I would never to be able to play a role in a science fiction film where I will be transformed into some kind of a robot, simply because that’s way out of line for me. When I played the racist baker in “Paris” [2008, dir. Cédric Klapisch] for example, I had to realize what it was all about, what that character was really like. It was a very complicated matter, so you really have to think about the way you’ll be doing your scenes.
