Olivier Gourmet: “A film is all about the director who is surrounded by the best possible cast and crew”

Olivier Gourmet (b. 1963) is a leading and character actor of French-language cinema since he first came to notice when playing the father who runs an illegal immigrant business in the absorbing and character-driven drama “La promesse” (1996, a.k.a. “The Promise”), one of the earlier features of screenwriting and directing duo, Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne, who by then already were hailed as some of Europe’s most accomplished filmmakers.

Since then, the Belgian-born actor appeared in all of Dardenne’s features, including as the boss in “Rosetta” (1999), which also launched the career of actress Émilie Dequenne who became one of France’s most reliable leading ladies, and he was the Best Actor winner at the Cannes Film Festival for his portrayal in another Dardenne screen classic “Le fils” (2002, a.k.a. The Son”).

Olivier Gourmet at the Festival du Film Francophone in Namur, Belgium | Leo/Film Talk

Making an average of four to five features a year, he worked with anyone who is anyone in French cinema, from Isabelle Huppert, Catherine Deneuve, and Marion Cotillard to Gérard Depardieu and Vincent Cassel. His latest film, “Ceux qui travaillent” (a.k.a. “Those Who Work”), is a psychological study of Frank, a workaholic who handles cargo ships he charters for various companies until he gets fired. Ultimately the bond he maintained with his youngest daughter becomes crucial. The Belgian-Swiss co-production, shown last summer at the Locarno Festival, is brutal and realistic with another compelling performance by Mr. Gourmet.

At the Festival International du Film Francophone in Namur, Belgium, he introduced the film at the city’s Théâtre de Namur where I talked to him about his film and his craft as an actor.

Mr. Gourmet, what is crucial to you and what you look for when they offer you a new role?

The screenplay, the story, and my character are the three things I focus on when I read a new script for the first time. There have been films, though, when the story was more important than my character because a film is much more than whatever my contribution may be. Any script means you have to work on the things people expect you to do. The story is there, but I try to deal with topics that I think are important enough to devote my time and energy to in telling that particular story. Film is a universal medium; it speaks all languages, so that makes it all the more interesting to take any screenplay and any story very seriously.

The character of Frank is tragic but also very realistic. Is it easy to find that perfect balance when you’re playing a character?

Yes and no. The character was very well-defined in the screenplay, so I knew from day one what I was up to. But when you work on your own role, you add an extra dimension to it, like ‘Why does he say this’ or ‘How does he do that, what’s the reason why he makes that decision and what are the consequences?’ That’s where you, as an actor, step in and need to take control because you try to feel what your character feels, and think what he thinks if you were in his shoes–always according to the script, and in collaboration with the film director.

When you are preparing for a new role, do you take your work home with you? Do you stay in character?

You will have to ask my wife [laughs]. I think she will confirm it. Two, three weeks before we start shooting, even when I am at home, I am elsewhere, I am living the life of my character to a certain extent. I like to work hard and prepare before we start shooting, like reading a lot about the type of character, talking to people, and [film director] Antoine Russbach and I reflected a lot about how the screenplay was constructed and how Frank walks, talks, moves, changes. Because an actor always asks himself, ‘Wouldn’t I do too much or too little?’ In the end, every tiny detail matters; it might be terribly important. So that’s why in those weeks preceding the shooting schedule, I’m not really who I am. I live in a small village in the Belgian Ardennes, it’s very quiet down there, and there I can fully concentrate on my work.

Is that important to you, living a quiet life far away from the spotlights?

I don’t mind at all staying out of the limelight because what matters to me are the films I do and the characters I play. That way the audience won’t associate me too much with my characters, and if they see a film of mine, they will look at my character instead of me. So I like to live somewhere very quietly, and not in the middle of this huge universe of film and cinema.

When you’re shooting, do you tend to look at the monitor after you just did a scène, to see if it looks like you had expected?

No, never. It wouldn’t do me any good. I only look at the director because he’s the person I’m working with and working for. If you would start looking at your work right away, you’d be tempted to change things, and I don’t think it would serve me. I always leave it up to the director: if he is satisfied, then so am I. I am part of his world, and therefore, I trust his vision and his judgment. A film is all about the director who is surrounded by the best possible cast and crew.

Would you still be acting if it weren’t for Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne?

Undoubtedly. Before I started making films, I had been working on the stage for many years. I still get offers, but I haven’t been on the stage for quite some time now because I guess the film community knows me better than the theater world does. But I would still be acting, and if not, I would easily find another passion that keeps me going.

What encouraged you to become an actor, to do what you’re doing now?

Basically, because I enjoy it so much, like when I was younger and played football, I did it because I enjoyed it. And when I was about twelve, I was le petit comique de la classe and I had a teacher who taught French, he told me, ‘That’s all right, but you can do something else too, you know.’ And from poetry, I turned to acting in school plays. I’ve been acting for several decades now, but I didn’t have any career plans, mainly because I only started to enjoy acting much later. My family had a farm; that’s where I grew up. We had no television, and we hardly listened to the radio, so up until I was about nineteen, the only thing I was familiar with were people who were working the whole time, that’s what I had seen all my life. La culture du travail, that’s what I grew up with, and at that time, I never even thought of working for theater or in film. Later I met the Dardenne brothers, and I really started to enjoy acting; I became very passionate about acting, about playing a role, and wanted to learn all about the characters I was going to play.
