Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne: Q&A after screening of “Young Ahmed” at the Cartoon’s in Antwerp

During their promotional tour in Belgium, Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne presented “Le jeune Ahmed” (a.k.a. “Young Ahmed”) in Cinema Cartoon’s in Antwerp. Café Sous-Sol, the well-known and multipurpose beverage facility located in the basement of the cinema, was designed as a fully-fledged event room to welcome both top directors, while their audience had been immersed in yet another intense and embodied viewing experience.

And there were many of them. Because of the tropical summer temperatures of up to 85° F, the terraces in Antwerp’s historical town center were pretty crowded, but the heat had no impact on the filmgoers and die-hard Dardenne fans: after the screening of “Young Ahmed,” they were interested all the more to hear the versatile and extremely talented filmmakers. It turned out to be a unique opportunity that did not go unnoticed.

It was not the first time that the Dardennes made their appearance at Cinema Cartoon’s. Hopefully it won’t be their last one either.

Because what exactly makes their presence so remarkable time and time again, wherever they appear? The brothers are screenwriters, directors and producers with a remarkable cinematographic vision who have established a solid international reputation for their emotionally realist cinema which includes nothing but major achievements. They start each project with a blank page and end with a finished film that is traditionally loaded with multiple international awards. Their consistent international recognition includes the rare feat of two Palme d’Or awards at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as Césars, a Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award, National Board of Review Award and, so far, one Oscar nomination.

Ever since they made “The Promise” (1996, a.k.a. “La promesse”), we have immediately become exposed and accustomed to this abundant luxury of being immersed in every new Dardenne film. Their exceptional, innovative and creative in-depth visual empathy and realism, the powerhouse performances from world stars to non-professional actors, and, let us not forget, their modesty—it’s a whole package that graces them to an incredible extent. One could describe them as everybody’s role model of cinematographic integrity. It doesn’t make them unique, but all the more unparalleled.

To maintain those high standards, they don’t even have to embellish the austere storyline of their movies. They simply and effortlessly project all the social sensitivities from their hometown Seraing on the screen, and, as is apparent once again with “Young Ahmed,” every word of dialogue was carefully chosen and thought through. Another typical landmark of theirs is their recognizable film style which reveals their previous career as remarkable documentary filmmakers: you always know how strict and simple their intriguing story will be presented. But don’t be surprised, you can guess what the package might look like, but you’re always in for such a treat once their films—any film of theirs really—begins.

German film director Volker Schlöndorff once told me during an interview: “Film is a very powerful medium, so you have the obligation to use it with extreme care.” And that’s when the Dardennes are at their best. With a film like “Young Ahmed” about a radicalized Muslim boy, the brothers show once more how well they master their craft and their powerful kind of storytelling, as they’re always capable, like no other, of dealing with a wide range of subjects that they have been able to incorporate into all of their feature films so far.

As the perfect ambassadors of the best that world cinema can buy, the first part of this French-language audio recording of the Dardennes’ Q&A at Cinema Cartoon’s was moderated by Lieven Trio, film journalist for the Flemish newspaper De Morgen, followed by questions from the audience [starting at 5:30 p.m.].

“Le jeune Ahmed” was released in various territories on 22 May.
