2025 Oscars: “Anora,” Sean Baker’s cry for independent films wins big, including Best Picture

American filmmaker Sean Baker (b. 1971) triumphed at the 97th Academy Awards yesterday as he became the first person in Oscar history to win four competitive Academy Awards for the same film on the same Oscars night. His latest feature, “Anora,” won five, with four for Mr. Baker for co-producing, directing, editing and writing the film’s screenplay. His achievement is all the more remarkable since his independent low-budget film only cost $6 million to make; up until now, the film’s cumulative worldwide gross is about $40 million.

He had only forty people on the entire film crew and he edited the film with his wife and co-producer Samantha Quan from their living room couch.

“Anora” tells the story of a sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, and earned newcomer Mikey Madison the Best Actress Oscar. Adrien Brody, a previous winner for Roman Polanski’s “The Pianist” (2002), won his second Oscar for Best Actor for his role in “The Brutalist”; the film received two more Oscars for cinematography and original score. Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”) and Zoe Saldaña (“Emilia Pérez”) won in the supporting acting categories.

”Emilia Pérez” had garnered thirteen Oscar nominations in total this year, the most of any other film, and won a second Oscar for Best Original Song.

Among the many speeches, Adrien Brody’s and Sean Baker’s thoughts and comments were inspiring and encouraging. The latter said, “Movie theaters, especially independently-owned theaters, are struggling. During the pandemic, we lost 1,000 screens in the U.S., and we continue to lose them regularly. If we don’t reverse this trend, we’ll be losing a vital part of our culture; this is my battle cry. Filmmakers: keep making films for the big screen. I know I will.”

Television personality Conan O’Brien emceed the Oscars for the first time, taking over from Jimmy Kimmel, who hosted the three previous editions.
