Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne: “A film is basically the result of the shooting process”

What would you do when two awesome filmkers such as Jean-Pierre Dardenne (b. 1951) and Luc Dardenne (b. 1954), a.k.a. the Dardenne brothers, are scheduled to be in Brussels—only miles from home—to host a masterclass about their working methods, their films, and their achievements? You just go; it’s that simple. After all, they rank among the world’s most renowned screenwriters and film directors, not only considering their long list of achievements and being the absolute favorites at the Cannes Film Festival for the past two decades (which earned them two Golden Palms, the Grand Prize of the Jury and the Best Screenplay Award, among others), but also—and most importantly—because of their entire body of work which up until now is flawless. Period.

Their first Golden Palm for “Rosetta” (1999) opened many doors: it was their introduction to a worldwide audience. On top of that, Émilie Dequenne, who made her screen debut at age seventeen portraying the title character, earned the Best Actress Award in Cannes and instantly became une grande dame, one of the most prominent and versatile leading ladies in French cinema.

The hour-long masterclass was an in-depth introduction to a Dardenne film retrospective at Flagey, Brussels, with “Rosetta“ being shown later in the evening. It would have been great if Ms. Dequenne could have been there to join the Dardenne brothers, but residing in Paris and being one of the most sought-after actresses in France since “Rosetta,” were the main reasons why the Belgian-born actress wasn’t available. Her leading man in “Rosetta” was, though: Fabrizio Rongione, who appeared in several other Dardenne pictures too, including as Marion Cotillard’s husband in “Deux jours, une nuit” (2014, a.k.a. “Two Days, One Night”).

“Rosetta” was in the same, grim realist mould as the Dardennes’ earlier “La Promesse” (a.k.a. “The Promise,” 1996); it, too, offered a glimmer of hope through the prospect of friendship. And like many of the Dardenne pictures, “Rosetta” was set in and around their hometown of Seraing, Belgium, with Rosetta, a seventeen-year-old girl, living with her hardened and hopeless mother in a dreary trailer camp on the outskirts of Seraing, whose ultimate goal is to have a normal life, with regular 9-to-5 employment. The film won several awards in Europe and the U.S., including many kudos for actress Émilie Dequenne. “Rosetta” was released to an overwhelmingly positive reception by the mainstream press and critics worldwide, including in the U.S.

In its May 24, 1999, review, Variety noted the film was ‘anchored by a performance of grim determination and almost feral instincts from its lead actress, [and] “Rosetta” is an extremely small European art movie from Belgian brothers Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne that will alienate as many viewers as it wins over.” During its U.S. opening weekend of merely two screens in New York, the film grossed over twenty thousand dollars.

Although their films always deal with serious subjects, here are Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne as they really are, with a great sense of humor | Leo/Film Talk

When The New York Times published their ’25 best films of the 21st century so far’ last June, their list, topped by Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood” (2007), also included Dardenne’s “L’enfant” (a.k.a. “The Child,” 2006), ranking at number fourteen. The film earned the Dardennes their second Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival, putting them in an elite club, at the time, of only seven filmmakers to do so. Hand-held cameras and the use of available light are some of their films’ trademarks.

Talking about “Rosetta” at Flagey, Luc Dardenne said, “Rosetta is a girl who doesn’t know what her next day will look like. Due to her limited resources, she has no real prospects in life. So we wanted to write her story and see how the audience was willing to follow her journey within the time frame of the film. We wanted to make sure they would get in touch with Rosetta’s feelings, with her emotions. On the set, the camera was not the most crucial component in her story: we made sure the camera wouldn’t be aware of what would happen in her life. It was as if the camera was only watching what was happening in Rosetta’s life. That’s a working method we discussed with Émilie, the entire cast, the crew, everybody on the set. Then you get a glimpse of Rosetta’s real feelings and emotions in each scene, sometimes without being aware you’ll be able to capture them on film.”

Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne as you rarely see them: they burst out laughing at their masterclass at Flagey, Brussels, introducing their film retrospective | Leo/Film Talk

His brother Jean-Luc added, “Sometimes you’d have the perfect moment a little bit too soon, or just too late. We had to find a perfect balance to make sure that Rosetta would to be a real character—a real human being, and not just a character you only watch on the screen. There’s also a reason why the film ends with a close-up of Rosetta. Her face is extremely important and it helps if the shooting of your film is more important than the editing because a film is basically the result of the shooting process.”
