How about a walk down memory lane to take a quick look at what happened at the box office in the U.S. and Canada forty years ago? As it turned out, 1977 would become a trendsetter, with the first “Star Wars” leading the box-office by the end of the year. No other film even came close. The six-time Oscar-winner—strictly in the technical departments—introduced a new era in filmmaking.
According to Variety, as published in their 72nd Anniversary Edition of January 4, 1978 – back then along with the Hollywood Reporter the only truly valuable and reliable source for any insider who needed to check the domestic rentals – Steven Spielberg’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” was a powerful entry at No. 9, considering the film wasn’t released until mid-November. Its continuing run in 1978 was a guarantee that the film would become a box office smash the following year as well, ranking at No. 2 in 1978’s box office results.
Most of the October-December openings of 1977 were on the market too sketchily for significance to be included in this list—except for “Close Encounters” which for obvious reasons couldn’t be ignored or overlooked.
So for the record, quite a number of films released by the end of 1977 are not—or not fully—included, such as Herbert Ross’ “The Goodbye Girl” and “The Turning Point,” Clint Eastwood’s “The Gauntlet,” or Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon.” They are listed in the 1978 box office charts which we’ll cover a year from now.
Information following each film title is the month of the U.S. release, and the film’s director.
But, for now, why don’t we let the facts speak for themselves? Here it is, 1977, when we were all forty years younger.
