Claudia Cardinale: “As an actor you have to make sure you don’t lose your own identity”

She was Italy’s answer to Brigitte Bardot and the leading lady to several of Europe’s most renowned actors, including Marcello Mastroianni (3 films), Vittorio Gassman (5), Alain Delon (3), and Jean-Paul Bemondo (3). After “I solito ignoti” (a.k.a. “Big Deal on Madonna Street,” 1958), she became one of the most recognizable faces in Italy. The swashbuckler “Cartouche” (1962) made her a star in France, and the following year, at age 25, CC—as she’s also often referred to—would become an established actress with her leading roles in Luchino Visconti’s “Il gattopardo” (a.k.a. “The Leopard,” 1963) which took the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, Federico Fellini’s “8 ½” which won an Academy Award as Best Foreign-Language Film, and Blake Edwards’ comedy “The Pink Panther,” one of her most successful films. It took Tunisian-born CC only a few years to step out of the shadow of Gina Lollobrigida or Sophia Loren, and conquer the world on her own after it all began by winning the ‘Miss Italy of Tunis 1957’ and subsequently a trip to the Venice Film Festival with her mother.

Claudia Cardinale during her visit to Brussels in December 2003 | Leo/Film Talk

Still making films today, Claudia Cardinale (b. 1938), a highly acclaimed actress for six decades now, mother of two, and a political liberal who has supported feminism over the years, is still going strong. In February 2011, The Los Angeles Times ranked her at # 7 in their top 50 of ‘Most Beautiful Women in Film.’ French actress Isabelle Adjani claimed the top spot of the list which also included Italy’s Monica Bellucci (# 4), Virna Lisi (# 29), and Sophia Loren (# 32). Along with BB (Brigitte Bardot, # 2) and MM (Marilyn Monroe, # 34), The LA Times didn’t overlook the silent era, as they included two actresses who had worked in silent films: Louise Brooks (# 6) and Greta Garbo (# 16).

With a husky voice as one of her trademarks, Ms. Cardinale, a star in her own right and one of the most photographed women of her era, was the embodiment of postwar Continental glamour, molded by Italian neo-realist producer Franco Cristaldi early on and whom she ultimately married in the mid-1960s (divorced in 1975).

Late December 2003, Ms. Cardinale was in Brussels and gave a sort of mini press conference. Although she has been on the carousel of ‘lifetime achievement awards’ for quite some time now, I must say I don’t recall the exact reason for her visit to the Belgian capital. But it was a joy to hear this very down-to-earth screen legend talking about her work in films.

Claudia Cardinale | Leo/Film Talk

Ms. Cardinale, you are an international actress, yet people usually associate you with Italian cinema because of your work for filmmakers such as Federico Fellini and Luchino Visconti. Would you agree with that?

Yes, that’s right. I’m kind of a mixture. I was born in Tunisia, and the first time I went to Italy, I was eighteen. I worked a lot in Italy and still go over there quite frequently. I am an Italian citizen, but I live in France. Overall I consider myself Italian, though. There were some wonderful film directors in Italy back then, that’s where I met the great ones, but unfortunately, they’re all gone now. Luchino Visconti was a master in filmmaking in every way. As a technician, as a cinematographer, the way he worked with his actors—anything. I loved working with him. But I never pursued any roles; I never called a film director or asked him for a role because I always hoped they would ask me. And when I accept a role, it all depends on the screenplay and the director. But I can be difficult too, meaning that I set high standards for myself, even when I see a film. I also like the magic of the big screen, an advantage of cinema to television. When something magical happens on the screen, and a lot of people in a theater are together to experience that, it’s always something special, a very special emotion.

What was it like to work for Fellini?

He was quite the opposite of Luchino Visconti. Fellini basically worked without a script when we did “8 ½” in Rome, his set was very chaotic, but he was magical. I did those two films [“8 ½” and “The Leopard”] almost simultaneously. As “The Leopard” was shot in Sicily, I was traveling back and forth from one set to another. Whenever you make a film, you are transformed into someone else, a character the director wants you to be. It’s not always easy, because as an actor you have to make sure you don’t lose your own identity.

You also had an interesting career in Hollywood. How did you manage to combine that with your career on the European continent?

Again, I never went over there to ask for any roles; they came to me. Very often, Hollywood gave European actors an exclusive contract, but I refused that because it takes your freedom away. There were too many restrictions. They wanted me to stay there, but that’s something I didn’t want to do. So I always signed one contract at a time, and that’s how I was able to work in a number of Hollywood films with some of the best actors of that era, like Rock Hudson, John Wayne, or Rita Hayworth, and work in Italian or French films at the same time.

“Fellini basically worked without a script when we did ‘8 ½’ in Rome,” she says | Leo/Film Talk

How about your days in Hollywood? What were they like?

It was great. I lived in Paul Newman’s house when I was there, and I made a few very good friends, like Steve McQueen and Rock Hudson.

Which directors in America have been important to you?

The first one I can think of out of the top of my head is Richard Brooks, we did “The Professionals” [1966] together. A marvelous director, and the cast… so many wonderful actors. I think that’s my best work in America. I also liked Blake Edwards, I did “The Pink Panther” for him here in Europe. That film was a tremendous success. People sometimes think “The Red Tent” [1969] with Sean Connery was an American film too, but that was a Russian-Italian co-production shot in Russia. Making that film was a big adventure. It was so cold over there; you have no idea.

Is it true that “Cartouche” has been one of your biggest hits in France?

Yes, and I still love that film very much, along with other films like “The Professionals” and Sergio Leone’s “Once Upon a Time in the West” [1968]

What are you very proud of?

I never did a nude scene, and I never did anything to change my face or my body. There’s nothing wrong with old age. I also never had a bodyguard or a driver, simply because I always like to be who I am.
