Sean Price Williams on “The Sweet East”: “The script was written to make us laugh”

“The Sweet East,” directed by veteran cinematographer Sean Price Williams (b. 1977), premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and is a picaresque journey through the cities and woods of the Eastern seaboard of the United States. The main character, Lillian, played by Talia Ryder, is a high school senior from South Carolina who gets her first glimpse of the wider world on a class trip to Washington, D.C.

Separated from her schoolmates, she embarks on a fractured road trip in search of America. Along the way, she encounters a variety of strange factions, each living out their own alternative realities in our present day.

As a cinematographer, Sean Price Williams made films with actors such as Greta Gerwig, Geena Davis, Tim Robbins, Ethan Hawke, Val Kilmer, Robert Pattinson, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Ewan McGregor. His long list of credits during the past two decades includes numorous independent feature films (see below), shorts, documentaries and episodes for TV series. “The Sweet East” is his directorial debut; previously, he had co-directed “Eyes Find Eyes” (2011) with Jean-Manuel Fernandez.

“The Sweet East” is written by his friend Nick Pinkerton, a former film critic for Film Comment, Sight & Sound and The Guardian, among others. The film is available in theaters in several territories and is released in Belgium through Cherry Pickers, playing in theaters from March 13.

Last October, Mr. Williams was in Belgium and attended the 50th edition of the Film Fest Ghent to talk about his film where the following conversation was conducted.

Mr. Williams, what triggered you to make this film, and how would you describe it?

Nick Pinkerton, the writer, and I are very good friends, and we decided to try something new for ourselves. I always wanted to direct, and maybe I shot a movie as a cinematographer that I didn’t like. I don’t know if it was that clear, but now it was just time for me to direct. Nick had written film criticism; we both came together and decided to make this film. He wrote it from ideas inspired by things in our lives—some real events—he just tied them together and wrote the script pretty quickly. He wrote it years ago, but it hasn’t changed much because the characters were still relevant in America, so there was not much need to change anything. As we made the film, we were still improvizing and doing crazy things, like bringing animation into it. That was not in the script; even the big massacre scene that happened is not really scripted that way at all. So we were constantly adding to it, but once we realized we had the freedom to make the movie, it just kind of snowballed. It comes from two guys who spent a lot of time together laughing in a bar. The script was written to make us laugh, to make our friends laugh.

Whenever I hear that a former film critic is writing a screenplay, it always reminds me of Peter Bogdanovich, or Robert Ebert who wrote for Russ Meyer.

Those are good examples. And as far as I am concerned, when a cinematographer becomes a director, his movie is often bad. Really great cinematographers have made really bad movies as directors. That’s not a great history—other than Nicolas Roeg, maybe.

Your end credits indicate that the film was shot on Kodak film. Not digitally? And did it affect the visual look of the film?

We shot on 16mm. That was important, I think. An important decision because it’s my most comfortable format. Visually, I had no big visual ideas going into the film. I was so focused on just directing, and I didn’t have a real strategy other than the style that changes when Lillian is with the different characters she meets. In the beginning, it’s handheld and kind of chaotic, and when she’s with Lawrence [played by Simon Rex] or Mohammed [played by Rish Shah], it’s on tripod. Those are the rules I made. I was going a little more automatic with the photography, so when people mention the way it looks, I forget to think about that.

“The Sweet East” (2023, clip)

Using 16mm and not shooting digitally, does that mean that there are restrictions? I suppose you couldn’t shoot as many takes as you wanted.

Yes, but I don’t want to shoot a lot of takes. I don’t like doing too many takes. I know some actors I worked with, when they know I’m shooting on film, it makes them happy because they know we have restrictions. I think shooting digitally, and shooting and shooting, is just not great because in the editing, you have more issues, and it’s exhausting and unnecessary. If we shot digitally, I would have used the same discipline, I think. I have a digital camera, and you use up the hard drive so quickly that it’s almost like shooting on film. I still would have been thinking very restrictively about shooting and recording, so I don’t feel limited by shooting on film.

Did you have total autonomy on the set?

Yes, it was important to our investor that we could do what we wanted to do. The producer—not the financial guy—but the producer is one of my old friends, and he was never coming at me, saying, ‘Hey, you’re shooting too much,’ or, ‘You can’t do that.’ That never happened. And he was very good with the money, so we were able to be free to do what we wanted to do. The financier never asked what we were doing; he was like a friend. We would hang out, we showed him the movie when it was done, and he liked it.

Suppose the budget was five times as high, would the film have looked any different?

I would not have asked for that. The movie wouldn’t need that. If we had a little more money, we would have had a little more time, and maybe we would have reshot one scene. I would rather make fun with five more movies than to put all that money into one movie. I don’t think movies need to cost that much. I prefer the next film to be on the exact same budget—and with the same people. As long as everyone is happy with what they get paid, then I think we’re in great shape.

If you look at the character of Lillian, is it correct to say that whatever she goes through in the film is a learning experience?

Definitely. She is a witness, but she is learning, and I think it’s important to see that she’s absorbing in a way that it’s a fantasy for maybe older people like me and Nick, the writer. Lillian is curious and fearless, and pays attention to what’s happening. I think that makes her a great person. We were making a movie about a girl that we think is becoming very strong and could be the greatest ever generation just by paying attention to people around her. So yes, she’s learning. I think a lot of these characters in the movie are like people I have met and who were important to me as a teenager. Probably Nick also; I had some guys that just helped me. I come from a very small town, very much like at the end of the film. There was no opportunity to go anywhere, but I met people that I paid attention to. They made me see how big the world is and how to be a part of the world. That’s what these guys are; they may be fill-ins, but they are also real people and people to learn from. I think all of these people in the news in America are people we should be learning from; even if you don’t like them—you can still learn from them. So Lillian is learning; she’s paying attention.

The film ends abruptly. You wonder what will happen to Lillian, or where she will go from there. Is there a sequel coming up?

Lillian is just beginning, you know. She’s going to do great things. My favorite movie is “If….” [1968] by Lindsay Anderson, and the sequel is “O Lucky Man!” [1973]. I think that we made sort of “O Lucky Girl!” His third movie was “Britannia Hospital” [1982], which I think was terrible. If we’d make a sequel, it would be about her becoming a Prime Minister of a country or a President. We need it to be an attractive job, to be the President again. It’s only a job for really crazy people. We need interesting people who want to be in charge of things again. So I think Lillian is a really good candidate for President when she’s a little bit older. That’s my sequel [laughs].

You mention Lindsay Anderson. Very few people remember him.

Nick and I are film buffs. We are watching movies all the time and discuss them. We both worked at great video stores; our whole education has been watching old movies. In New York, there are great theaters to see old films on 35mm all the time, and we have a lot of younger friends that we’re always showing movies to. Film is very much alive in New York, it’s a good time to be in New York right now if you like movies. So Lindsay Anderson is no stranger to us.

Did you ever meet some of the filmmakers that you always admired?

I’ve been able to meet Jerry Lewis and Norman Mailer. It’s great to have our generations crossed. Now I spend a lot of time around Paul Schrader. I also worked with Abel Ferrara; that’s fun too.

Any other filmmakers that you consider your heroes?

One of them is on my phone—Nicholas Ray. He’s my number one guy, as a person and also as a filmmaker. I worked with his widow on a documentary about him, and I got all this material that he shot when he was a teacher. When he was in his sixties, he was wilder and crazier with his ideas of cinema than ever, and that spirit is something that I look forward to. I’m just getting started as a director right now; I’m in my mid-forties. Just wait until I’m in my mid-sixties, and then I’ll have some really crazy movies to make. Just like Nicholas Ray.

He was always one of those highly underrated filmmakers, don’t you think? Like Samuel Fuller, for example.

In New York, these are the guys that we talk about all the time in our little groups. When I worked at the video store, these were guys that we also talked about. We have to make sure that the younger people know about all of them. It’s exciting to know their history and to read about what they were doing.

When you shot “The Sweet East,” did you think of some of their memorable scenes?

Always. I used to work with documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles. His films are always on my mind when I have a camera in my hand. Also Walerian Borowczyk, the Polish filmmaker; his posters were all around our editing room. He’s one of my biggest visual inspirations. There are a few things we stole from him, also his editing style and his editing rhythm. There are also New York underground filmmakers like John Kuchar and John Waters—I also thought about John Waters when we were making our movie. There are also some references to D.W. Griffith. They’re kind of all over the place.
