Adrienne Barbeau (b. 1945) is an American actress, singer, and author whose career has spanned more than five decades across theater, film, and television. The California-born screen star first rose to prominence in the 1970s and became an enduring figure in popular culture—especially within the horror genre, where she is often celebrated as a ‘scream queen.’
She began her career on the stage, performing in musical theater before achieving major recognition on Broadway. She made her Broadway debut in the chorus in “Fiddler on the Roof” (1968, where she worked alongside Bette Midler, another unknown at the time), and her breakthrough role came four years later in the original Broadway production of “Grease,” where she played bad-girl Betty Rizzo, the tough yet vulnerable leader of the Pink Ladies (in Randal Kleiser’s 1978 film, Stockard Channing played the character). Her performance earned her a Tony Award nomination as Best Supporting or Featured Actress (Musical) in 1972—Linda Hopkins won for “Inner City”—and established her as a rising star with strong vocal ability and commanding stage presence.
She transitioned to television and became widely known for her role as Carol Traynor, the divorced, rebellious single mother and daughter of Maude Findlay, on the hit sitcom “Maude” (1972–1978, an “All In The Family” spin-off centered around Edith’s cousin, Maude). In 1977, the show earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress (Television); the award went to Josette Banzat for the miniseries “Rich Man, Poor Man.”
“Maude” was produced by Norman Lear and became groundbreaking for its bold treatment of social and political issues. Barbeau’s character added a modern, independent edge to the series; her work on “Maude” brought her into millions of American homes each week and made her a familiar face during the golden era of socially conscious sitcoms.

In the 1980s, Barbeau shifted her focus to film, particularly in the horror and science fiction genres. She became closely associated with director John Carpenter, whom she married in 1979; they divorced five years later. She starred in four of his films: “Someone’s Watching Me!” (1978, TV movie), “The Fog” (1980), “Escape from New York” (1981), and “The Thing” (1982). In “The Fog,” she played the whisky-voiced Stevie Wayne, a late-night radio DJ and radio station owner of KAB, who becomes a central figure during a supernatural invasion of her coastal town; it set the mood for one of cinema’s most haunting visions rolling in from the sea. The film became a cult classic and establishing Barbeau as a genre film star.
Beyond Carpenter’s films, Barbeau appeared in other notable genre works such as Wes Craven’s “Swamp Thing” (1982), based on the DC Comics character, and “Creepshow” (1982), an anthology horror film directed by George A. Romero and written by Stephen King. Her strong screen presence, distinctive voice, and confident persona made her particularly well-suited to roles that blended toughness with vulnerability.
In addition to live-action acting, Barbeau built a substantial voice acting career. She provided the voice of Catwoman in “Batman: The Animated Series” (1992-1995), introducing the character to a new generation of fans. Her smoky, expressive voice became one of her trademarks and contributed significantly to her longevity in the entertainment industry.

Barbeau is also an accomplished author. In 2006, she published her memoir, “There Are Worse Things I Could Do,” reflecting on her life in Hollywood, her marriages, and her experiences in theater and film. The book—a lively, joyous, hilarious, and intimate account of her life—went to #11 on the Los Angeles Times bestseller list. She also wrote the mystery novels “Vampyres of Hollywood” (2008), “Love Bites” (2010), and “Make Me Dead” (2015). She co-wrote and edited “Grease: Tell Me More, Tell Me More—Stories from the Broadway Phenomenon That Started It All” (2024), while, since the early 1970s, she has continued acting nearly non-stop in front of the camera, and her website abarbeau.com indicates she’s constantly traveling all over the country, making personal appearances.
The following interview with Ms. Barbeau was conducted a couple of days ago at the latest edition of the BIFFF—Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival— which welcomed her as one of its guests of honor; she was accepted into the Order of the Knights of the Raven, and the festival featured the world premiere of her latest film, “Oddities,” a horror thriller written and directed by Tyler Savage.
The film tells the story of two self-destructive best friends who accidentally kill their drug dealer, and they have to flee town. Stopping at a roadside antique shop, they quickly discover that the older woman running the place isn’t as sweet as she seems. It’s out of the frying pan and into the fire as they fight for survival while the criminals they were running away from descend on the property.
As of now, the trailer is not yet available. Spoiler alert: here you can find Tyler Savage’s 2023 short “Oddities,” on which the feature film is based. The short also features Ms. Barbeau, who runs the antique store.
Ms. Barbeau, where do you put “Oddities” in your whole body of work?
You know, I’m going to have to see it again, and I’m going to have to live with it a little bit. In terms of everything I’ve done, it was a wonderful experience, and there were moments when we were filming, and something would come out of me, and I would be just, ‘Oh!’ I didn’t know that was going to happen, I didn’t know that’s the way this character was going to speak or say something or respond. She surprised me, and I think it was perhaps a culmination of having done so much that it all felt very easy. Watching the film last night, I think maybe there was one moment where I thought, ‘Oh, that wasn’t as honest as it could have been.’ Just one moment, and it was a scream, but it just felt like the scream went on a little too long, and all of a sudden I dropped out for a second. Does that make any sense? But it was a great experience, and I’m very happy with it.
“The Fog (1980, trailer)
Has that happened before, that you thought something could have been done differently?
I know when John [Carpenter] first put “The Fog” [1980] together. He didn’t think the film worked. It wasn’t scary enough and it didn’t work for him. He was very upset. So he went to Avco Embassy and said, ‘Look, I’ll pay for this myself if I have to, but I need to shoot again. I need to add more footage.’ And he did, and that really turned the film around. But at last night’s screening of “Oddities,” they laughed when we expected them to laugh. They were happy that what had happened also happened. And it just took me by surprise. I was like, ‘Oh, that’s okay.’ I’ve never been in the director’s chair, so I’ve never been aware of when something wasn’t working and we had to go back in again. Although John did add a scene to “Escape from New York” [1981]. There was a scene on the bridge where Maggie is firing at the Duke [played by Isaac Hayes]; the Duke is driving the car at her, and it ends with Maggie firing at the Duke. John screened the film for a group of executives from the studio, and J.J. Abrams was there. He was like a teenager back then. And when it was over, J.J. said, ‘Well, what happened to Maggie?’ So we went back and we took the cars out of our garage, and I put the costume on again, laid down on the floor, and they put blood around me. And that final shot of Maggie dead was added.
How do you explain the chemistry between you and John Carpenter?
He always made sure that everybody was happy on the set. The cast and crew trusted him, and he knew how to convey his vision to everyone. I trusted him completely.
After all those years, casting-wise, do you still get the roles that you like to play?
Well, I guess I have to answer it backward: I take the roles that are offered to me that I want to play. By that I mean I do get roles offered to me that I’m not interested in playing because, for one reason or another, I don’t like the character, or I don’t buy the character. Especially with horror; I don’t want to see six totally unknown people that I’ve never seen on screen before get killed in the first two minutes of the film in the most gruesome way. That’s the way horror has sort of gone in the last years. I’ve auditioned for roles that I really would have liked to have gotten and didn’t get them. But that’s the business. Somebody else is taller or more right. I know they’ve asked me to audition because they already know I can do it, but when it comes down to it, maybe another actress is better for whatever reason.

You have been working in films and for television for more than 50 years now. So age doesn’t matter to get interesting roles?
I think the industry has changed a bit, or maybe that’s the reason I’m so enamored of European television and European films because the actresses we’re seeing in the things that I watch are not 22 years old. They’re in their mid-40s or older, and they’re playing strong women. I don’t know if there’s been a change, and certainly I don’t expect to have a plethora of roles for someone my age. I guess I’m in an awkward stage because although I’m 80, I don’t represent the way people think of an 80-year-old sometimes, although maybe more and more people are understanding that an 80-year-old can have energy or look younger than what we think of as 80 years old. I mean, I don’t play grandmothers very well, although I did. I just played a grandmother in another film called “Hannah Goes to Hell” with Krsy Fox from “Terrifier 3” (2024). But when I was 51, I was offered the role of Ruthie in HBO’s “Carnivàle” (2003-2005). She was a wizened, old carny worker who danced with snakes. And for a 51-year-old woman to be playing a snake dancer who’s very sensual and having a love affair with a 26-year-old, those kinds of roles certainly weren’t happening for women my age at that time. You played a judge, a nurse, a doctor, or a lawyer. So that was really exceptional, I think.
Among the many highlights in your career and in your life, would your invitation to the White House to meet President Carter and Mrs. Carter be high on your list?
I really never thought about that, but yes, I would think so. Well, my invitation to the BIFFF and getting the Knight of the Raven Award, that’s something very special too. A few years ago, I got a lifetime achievement award at a film festival on the Canary Islands; that really touched me because back in 1965, when I went to New York to try and be on Broadway, I just set out to see if I could earn a living as an actor. And now they’re saying that I have done this and that in my life. But being at the White House, it was wonderful to meet the President and Mrs. Carter. But that’s so long ago. I also did a commercial for Nancy Reagan when she was First Lady, called ”Just Say No to Drugs.” I think it was based on “The Fog” or some horror film I did, and I was saying NO to drugs.
