Asia Argento: “Abel Ferrara shaped the way I look at cinema, the way I look at my work”

Asia Argento (b. 1975) is an Italian actress, director, screenwriter, and singer who is also known for her artistic independence and outspoken activism. She is the daughter of Italian filmmaker Dario Argento (b. 1940), renowned for his influence on modern horror and slasher movies, after a long career working  in the Italian giallo film genre that often contains elements of slasher, thriller, psychological and supernatural horror, psychological thriller, and sexploitation. Her mother is Italian television and film actress and screenwriter Daria Nicolodi (1950-2020). Growing up in a creative and unconventional environment shaped her artistic sensibilities from a young age.

With Graham Guit’s “Plus fort que le diable” (a.k.a. “Stronger Than the Devil”) as one of her latest features, Ms. Argento began acting at age nine in Sergio Citti’s television miniseries “Sogni e Bisogni” (1984); in Italian films she quickly developed a reputation for portraying complex, often troubled characters. One of her early breakthrough roles came in “Perdiamoci di vista” (1994, a.k.a. “Let’s Not Keep In Touch”), directed by Carlo Verdone, which earned her critical recognition in Italy. She later gained international attention for various international films she did, including for portraying Charlotte of Sauve in “La reine Margot” (1994, a.k.a. “Queen Margot”), directed by Patrice Chéreau.

Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Ms. Argento appeared in a variety of European and American films. She starred in “La sindrome di Stendhal” (1966, a.k.a. “The Stendhal Syndrome”), directed by her father—their second of six films together—and later crossed over into Hollywood with roles in films such as the blockbuster “xXx” (2002, worldwide gross $277 million). In this action epic, a salute to the Bond franchise, she played a former KGB named Yelena opposite Vin Diesel.

In “Last Days” (2005), Gus Van Sant’s fictionalized account of the last days of a musician, loosely based on Kurt Cobain, she played one of the musician’s roommates. Despite working in mainstream productions from time to time, she maintained a strong connection to independent and experimental cinema.

In addition to acting, Ms. Argento established herself as a filmmaker. Her directorial debut, the Italian drama “Scarlet Diva” (2000), was a semi-autobiographical film that explored the struggles of a young actress navigating fame, exploitation, and personal turmoil. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and reflected Argento’s bold, confessional storytelling style. In the U.S. she later directed the drama “The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things” (2004), adapted from the novel by J. T. LeRoy. The film received a limited release in North America.

She has also worked in music, appeared in music videos, collaborated with various artists and performed as a singer. Her artistic identity often blends cinema, fashion, and underground culture, contributing to her status as a distinctive figure in European art circles.

Later, she became one of the prominent voices in the global #MeToo movement after publicly accusing Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein of sexual assault. Her allegations were among the first high-profile claims that helped expose widespread abuse in the film industry. She delivered a powerful speech at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, condemning industry silence and complicity. Her activism brought both support and controversy, placing her at the center of public debates about accountability and power dynamics in entertainment.

Asia Argento’s speech at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival

Her career reflects her commitment to artistic risk-taking and personal expression. Whether acting in provocative dramas, directing intimate independent films, or speaking out against injustice, she is an independent voice in international cinema.

Last April, she was one of the guests at the latest Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival to promote her latest film “Plus fort que le diable,” written and directed by French filmmaker Graham Guit.

In “Plus fort que le diable,” the life of Joseph and his girlfriend is comfortable, and they follow a predictable daily routine. Everything is meticulously planned and calculated. One day, Joseph unexpectedly runs into Valentin, his biological father. Valentin is the opposite of his son: he’s confused, broke, drunk, and unpredictable. Their reunion takes an unexpected turn when Valentin’s old acquaintances JP and Mila (character played by Ms. Argento) arrive, stirring up complications.

“Plus fort que le diable” (2025, French-language trailer without subtitles)

The following conversation with Ms. Argento was conducted in French at Palais 10 in Brussels, home of the BIFFF.

Ms. Argento, were you familiar with Graham Guit’s work before you collaborated with him on this film? What drew you to the role of Mila? Was it because she was a strong, determined woman?

I wasn’t familiar with Graham’s work, unfortunately. In fact, the role was originally written for a man, and the character’s name was Milo. When I read the script, I knew there was another actor who was supposed to play the role. After I had read the script, I begged to play the part. He agreed and didn’t change a thing, except for the name: it became Mila. And, yes, I loved that character’s madness. I loved the whole script. It’s crazy, just like me. I feel right at home in this world of people who aren’t normal. All I did was gain some extra weight and build some muscles; I wanted to be believable physically. So that’s it, basically, and I loved the experience. It’s great to promote the film here at the BIFFF because here you have one of the best audiences for a film like this. When I saw that the Festival would screen the film, I thought, ‘I absolutely have to come and see the film with the audience here because this is the best audience for a black comedy.’ I don’t even know how to describe the genre of this film.

It’s a very dark comedy with plenty of gory, bloody scenes, isn’t it? Do you think it accurately reflects the level of violence found in our contemporary society?

Horror cinema—take George A. Romero’s films, for example [in 2005, they made “Land of the Dead”]—always reflects society, politics, and the things we don’t like. The genre is like a four-walled space where we move around and do whatever we want. We have more freedom within the confines of a genre film, I think, more than in auteur cinema, for example. We can better convey through metaphors—like this film—what we’re experiencing in the news.

Is it a film that’s not very politically correct?

That’s what I love about it. That’s what I’ve always loved.

Things are often very edgy in your films. Why are you so interested in things that might shock people, like in trashy stuff? Is it because of your father’s legacy of giallo films?

Yes, that twisted sense of humor, I always loved that. It makes me laugh. And with normal comedy, I have a hard time laughing. Comedy never makes me laugh. But with this one, I find myself in something I recognize. That’s who I am. I don’t know if it’s because of my father’s films, or just because of a twisted part of my soul.

What criteria do you use to accept a role? Is it the character, the script, maybe the director?

All of that. All of that, and sometimes the money too. It’s important, more so today than before.

I always imagine that when you’re at home, you read the scripts that you receive, and you think, ‘That doesn’t interest me,’ ‘This one, we’ll see,’ or ‘That one, definitely.’ Is that how you choose your roles?

Yes, and I pay a lot of attention to the dialogue. I know right away if it’s something I believe in, if I can say it and be believable. I did a few comedies in Italy, but I often struggled with them because I didn’t talk like that in real life. I can bring my intellect and the expertise from my work to the table, which I’ve been doing for forty-one years. But at the same time, it doesn’t always come naturally to me—especially when I’m doing comedy. Because I don’t get it; it doesn’t make me laugh. So I don’t know how to make people laugh with something that isn’t part of me. That’s why the dialogue is so crucial, especially the way it is written, because then I know whether I believe it or not.

Looking at your career, you managed to combine a high-profile international career with horror films, B movies, and other niche genres. Does it say something relevant about your relationship with cinema?

You know, it’s not just how I experience cinema; it’s also how cinema experiences me. The projects come to me, people ask me to make a film. It’s not me who decides to shoot in America, France, or Belgium—I’ve also shot here with a female director. People ask me for a film; then I read the script and see if it interests me. And with “Plus fort que le diable,” I absolutely insisted on doing it; I really wanted to, I even prayed for it. It was very important for me to make this film because I wanted to do something that made me laugh.

Of all the filmmakers you worked with so far, who had the biggest influence on you and on the way you’ve approached your craft?

Definitely Abel Ferrara because we made a few films together [“New Rose Hotel,” 1998; “Go Go Tales,” 2007; “Padre Pio,” 2022]. He even shaped the way I look at cinema, the way I look at my work, the way I do my work. Since then, I knew better what to look for, or how to do it. In a way, he ruined my career because I did some very extreme things. Especially the movie “Go Go Tales” where I kissed a dog; that was even worse than #MeToo for my career. It was like a nail in my coffin. But, in any case, that was my journey, and I’m proud to have followed my urge to break taboos. Somebody had to do it; I guess it was my destiny.

You also appeared in six films directed by your father. Is this family legacy something that shaped you, or something you’ve ultimately tried to break free from?

Both. It’s a push-and-pull. Especially when I was younger, I wanted to assert myself… ‘But wait, I’m not just the daughter, I’m Asia!’ And then, it became even more extreme than genre cinema. But his films, that’s my DNA, too. After all, he’s my father, and I’m very proud.

Do you think society has become less tolerant?

Society… the dominance of American puritanism has influenced us; we’ve been contaminated, and then the #MeToo movement didn’t help either. It’s a shame because, for me, #MeToo is about women’s freedom, and women’s freedom isn’t about ‘Don’t touch, don’t look.’ It’s a different dimension, something entirely different. Puritanism has really damaged cinema, I think it’s even damaging the stories we tell. But perhaps only in genre—which is deeply cherished by a very loyal audience that loves those films—it is still possible to make those films. While in auteur cinema, everything has become tame, quiet, and boring.

About twenty years ago, you shot a few films in the United States. At the time, I thought you were going to become an American actress with an American career.

Yes, it’s strange. Because I went to live there to make my film as a director [“The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things,” 2004]. There are moments in life when you have two paths: you can either go this way or that way. And my agent there really wanted me to do another comedy, and some other movies. He said, ‘We’ll make a million, two million, and then you can make your film.’ I said that I had been an actress since I was nine, and now I was twenty-six or twenty-seven, and I said to myself, ‘No, I didn’t build my whole career just to come here and become a fool like the people I hate.’ Okay, some films were successful, and I had other successes already in Italy and France. But I didn’t want to be some kind of visitor or an alien, like the people I saw over there. So I decided to take the path I already knew, to make auteur cinema, extreme cinema, and make my own film over there. I did a film with Dennis Hopper [“The Keeper,” 2004]. That wasn’t a good movie, but, for me, it was an incredible experience because it was just him and me. So I learned a lot. I also worked with Gus Van Sant [“Last Days,” 2005]. I went over there to try new things; then, shortly after I finished my film, I left. Hollywood wasn’t for me because you had to wear those clothes, that jewelry, style your hair a certain way, live in a house like that, and hang out with people like that. It just didn’t work for me.

Instead you’ve collaborated extensively with people in France. What does France mean to you in terms of your career? Has it influenced the way you make films, or the way you work in general?

It didn’t affect my approach to filmmaking. I made different kinds of films in France than I did in Italy. But it helped me a lot because in Italy, they didn’t know how to categorize me. I was too strange, too different from typical Italian actresses: there was the beauty, there was the intellectual, and then there was me. I wasn’t one or the other; I was something different. But in France, I was more accepted, more normal—people were more fascinated by me, they weren’t afraid. I had opportunities—including in this film—to do the work that I loved. I got to play characters that didn’t exist in Italy.

So far, “Incompresa” [a.k.a. “Misunderstood,” 2014] was your last feature film as a director. Would you like to direct another film?

No, although I tried. I wrote two projects. But in Italy, it’s impossible because it’s even worse than in America. It’s all about marketing. ‘That’s too extreme, we can’t do that!’ So, no, it’s not possible for me. And I don’t have the strength I had when I was younger, when I really fought to tell my story. Now I think that it’s better to be an actress. And it is.
